With all that potential for screaming children and unfortunate bees, it’s no wonder that parents try to steer their children away from any bees that try to come close.
But we feel that bees are the Beest. They are also a fantastic way for children to learn about the natural world and should be far from something to be feared.
Why are Bees so important?
Honey bees are vital to our supply of healthy foods, as they pollinate the plants that make it possible for many flowers, fruits, and vegetables to grow. One out of every three bites you eat depends on pollination. If bees and other pollinators disappear, many of your favourite foods will not be able to grow.
-Bees are important to the earth
Bees work with nature to grow delicious fruits and vegetables that we all can enjoy.
-Bees can dance
To let other bees know where to find the best Pollen, they dance to let the other bees know where to find those tasty flowers.
-Bees are often drawn to the most beautiful flowers
Colourful flowers often have the best Pollen, making them the favourite of bees everywhere. It is delicious for the Bees to have lots of great flowers all around them.
-Disappearing Bees are a mystery
For many years now, Bees have been disappearing. Many people have ideas why that might be happening, but nobody is fully sure. It could be your chance to follow some bees and see what they are doing.
-Each Bee has a special job
Each Bee has a different role in the Hive. Starting with the Queen. She lays the eggs for all the future children of the Hive. Then there are the Drones. They mate with the Queen and let all the babies be born into the world. Finally, the workers fly across the land to collect Pollen for the Hive to make Honey and Beeswax. Every job is important, and without any one of them, the Hive would not live.
-Bees make a whole lot of Honey
Each Hive can produce around thirty kilograms of Honey. You wouldn’t think of that by looking at them. Along with the Honey, they also make a great amount of other useful things. Like Beeswax and Royal Jelly, to name a few.
What can you and your kids do to help?
-Let part of your lawn grow without mowing. Bees love flowering weeds and grasses. A patch of wildflowers will add colour and be a great nectar source for bees. Using Seedbombs, you can grow pollinator-friendly plants in any outdoor space and make a landscape with diverse colours, shapes and sizes.
-With the help of the Bee revive kit if you see a dying bee. You and your kids can bond over bringing an injured or dying bee back to life
-Bees can’t swim or get their wings wet, but they need water, too! Try filling a shallow pie pan with pebbles and water so bees have somewhere to land and sip some H2O. Bonus: no cleaning required! Bees love “dirty” water, which is why they love the water that gathers in saucers under flower pots.
-Support farmers who are doing their best for the local bees. Anytime you choose organic food, you know the good farmers did not use any nasty pesticides that can harm our pollinators. Bee on the lookout for organic veggies and fruits, which contain nutrients that can help our bodies stay healthy — all brought to you by bees! And don’t forget to buy local Honey! You’ll help support local honey bee efforts, which means that more food can be grown locally, and you will Bee more likely to find a flying friend.
These are just a few of the ways that you can help keep the Bees from harm. It takes all of us helping out the natural world for it to work.
Good luck on your journey to help the Bees!
